This is a unique position as it requires winemaking, distilling, laboratory and vineyard skills.
This is an all-around position and the successful candidate will be involved in every aspect of production from berry to bottle with a potential for advancement to head winemaker.
Currently, the cellar is operated by two people, the Head Winemaker and Assistant Winemaker.
This work requires constant use and exposure to hazardous materials (mainly sulfur, acid and base) in a wet environment, in confined spaces and high places.
Caution and adherence to safety protocol is essential.
This position requires some weekend work to assist in the tasting room as required.
This position reports to the Head Winemaker.
Under indirect close supervision performs routine physical and chemical analysis of grapes, juice, wine, water, or any other related material pertaining to the operation of the company.
While doing so, observes the department's operating procedures and safety practices.
Essential Vineyard Duties Include Collect grapes samples from the vineyards and analyze for ripeness Take soil moisture and leaf growth readings in the vineyard during the growing season Essential winemaking responsibilities include:
Assist in the supervision of grape receiving, crushing, processing, and wine production Preparing work orders and conducting bulk and bottled wine inventory.
operating pumps, bottling and crush/press equipment, operating a forklift/man lift and stacking barrels, filling/topping and racking barrels, Transferring and racking tanks.
Assist supervisors with recordkeeping, FDA lot tracking, analysis entry, or any other database entry.
Participating in wine tastings, evaluating wines, and recommending treatment.
Assist in educational tastings and tours of the wine facility.
Essential Laboratory Duties and Responsibilities include, but not limited to:
Daily set-up and calibration of laboratory equipment.
Preparation and standardization of laboratory reagents.
Collect and prepare juice/wine samples for analysis.
Perform juice/wine analysis in a timely fashion, using either automated or bench chemistry analytical methods, Set-up of various wine trials, including additions, blends, heat and cold stabilities.
Routine preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment.
Inform supervisors of the need to purchase lab operating supplies Bottling quality control Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the lab.
Requirements:
An AA or BS degree in enology or viticulture or 3 years experience working in the field Must be computer literate (word and excel) with excellent reasoning abilities and outstanding organization & verbal communication skills.
Familiarity with Vintrace or similar cellar software program a plus Required to work rotating shifts and overtime.
Must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time and lift up to 55 lbs.
